What a leaflet does that a screen cannot
It sits in a house. It gets picked up twice. It reaches people who never search, never scroll and never open marketing emails. For community organisations, local services and anything with an older or offline audience, print is not nostalgia; it is often the only channel that reaches them at all.
Quick answer
Print works when it lands with the right people at the right moment and is designed to be kept. A leaflet that gets pinned to a fridge outperforms an ad that gets scrolled past.
When it earns its place
Print pays off when the audience is defined by place or by an existing relationship: a community centre, a doctor's surgery, a membership base, a trade show, a customer you already serve. It does not pay off when it is sprayed at a postcode and hoped for.
- Handed out where your customers already gather
- Sent to existing customers or members
- Left where people wait and read
- Given at the end of a job with a reason to keep it
What makes it get kept
The leaflets that survive the recycling bin have something on them people want to keep: a checklist, a calendar, a set of contact details they will need again, a QR code to something genuinely useful. The design job is making that thing obvious, and the brand recognisable at a glance.
| Gets binned | Gets kept | |
|---|---|---|
| Wall of text about the organisation | One clear headline and three things you can do | |
| Stock photo of a handshake | Real people, real place | |
| No reason to keep it | A useful reference, offer or contact card | |
Design rules that survive folding
A tri-fold has six panels and a reading order that is not left to right. The front panel has one job: make someone open it. Inside, the eye lands on the centre first. Contact details go where a hand naturally rests. Colour and type should match the website exactly, so the person who looks you up online recognises you instantly.
Track it like anything else
Print is not unmeasurable. A dedicated phone number, a short URL, a QR code with tracking and a 'how did you hear about us' question on the enquiry form will tell you within a month whether a print run paid for itself. We have seen a well-placed leaflet outperform a paid social campaign for the same budget more than once.
