Why content matters more for small businesses, not less
Big brands can buy attention. A small business has to earn it, and content is how you do that without a media budget. A useful guide, a plain-English answer to a question your customers keep asking, a short video showing how you actually work: each one keeps paying you back long after it is published.
Quick answer
Pick one channel, publish something useful every fortnight for six months, and track enquiries rather than likes. That alone puts you ahead of most of your competitors.
Start with the questions you already get asked
The best content ideas are already in your inbox. Every question a prospect asks before they buy, every objection your sales team hears, every 'how does this work' on a first call is a piece of content waiting to be written. Start a list. Add to it for a week. You will have a quarter's worth of topics.
- Questions people ask before they buy
- Mistakes you see customers make that you could help them avoid
- Comparisons between options you get asked about
- Things you wish every customer knew before they got in touch
Pick a format you can sustain
Blog posts, short videos, LinkedIn posts, email newsletters: all of them work. None of them work if you stop after three. The right format is the one you can produce every fortnight without it becoming a chore, so be honest about what that is.
| Format | Time per piece | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Blog post | 3 to 5 hours | Search traffic that compounds |
| Short video | 1 to 2 hours | Social reach and trust |
| LinkedIn post | 30 minutes | B2B visibility, founder authority |
| Email newsletter | 2 hours | Repeat business, warm leads |
Make it findable
Content and search go hand in hand. You do not need to become an SEO expert, but each piece should use the phrases your customers would actually type into Google, have a clear title and answer the question early. That is most of the job.
Measure enquiries, not applause
Likes are nice. Enquiries pay the bills. Track which posts people read before they fill in your form, which emails get replies, and which videos lead to a profile visit and then a click. If you only measure one thing, measure how many people who consumed your content went on to get in touch.
